Poppy Seeds
A data story in six steps
Poppy seeds come from the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. The seeds themselves contain little or no morphine, but they can pick up opium alkaloids from the latex of the capsule during harvest. That residue is why a bagel can show up on a drug test, why the EU sets a legal maximum for morphine on poppy seeds, and why tea made from unwashed seeds has killed people.
01 · Flower
The opium poppy is an annual that grows to about a metre, with flowers 8 to 18 cm across in red, white or mauve. It is the same species that bakers, gardeners and pharmaceutical growers use; varieties differ in how much alkaloid they produce. What poppy seeds are
02 · Capsule
When the petals drop, a round capsule swells under a crown of 12 to 18 rays. Its wall carries a white latex that contains morphine, codeine, thebaine and other alkaloids. Dried, that latex is opium. The seeds ripen inside the same capsule.
03 · Seed surface
A poppy seed is under a millimetre long, with a pitted surface. During mechanical harvest, seeds rub against crushed capsule and latex, and alkaloids end up on the outside of the seed. How much depends on variety, harvest time and origin. Why poppy seeds can carry morphine
04 · Cleaning
Industrial cleaning, heat and processing lower the alkaloid content; the EU puts the reduction at 25 to 100 percent. Since July 2022, poppy seeds sold to consumers in the EU may carry at most 20 mg of morphine equivalents per kg, and bakery products 1.5 mg/kg. EU limits
05 · Test threshold
Morphine from food reaches the urine within hours. US federal workplace tests flag opiates from 2,000 ng/mL, a cut-off raised from 300 ng/mL in 1998 because poppy seeds and prescriptions caused so many false alarms. The European Workplace Drug Testing Society recommends 300 ng/mL. Drug tests
06 · Risk
Tea brewed from unwashed seeds can contain enough morphine to stop breathing, and nobody can tell the strength of a batch in advance. The US consumer group CSPI counts at least 19 deaths. Poppy seed tea risks

Half true
Not as such. The seed itself is practically free of alkaloids. Morphine and codeine come from latex residue on the outside, picked up during harvest.
Fact
It can, depending on the seeds, the test and the timing. In a 2015 study, a poppy seed roll gave urine morphine up to 1,408 ng/mL, enough for a 300 ng/mL test and below the US federal 2,000 ng/mL cut-off.
Myth
No. In the EU they must stay under 20 mg/kg, which is not zero. Labs in Bavaria still find morphine in most poppy seed bakery products, rarely above the limit.
Fact
Yes. Singapore classifies poppy seeds as prohibited goods: importing them, even in food, needs a declaration and a negative laboratory test for morphine. Law per country
Myth
It is not. The morphine content of unwashed seeds varies widely from batch to batch, and published post-mortem reports describe deaths in which the tea was the primary cause.

Food portions of seeds that meet the EU limit are not expected to cause noticeable effects. EFSA's concern is high intake of seeds with high alkaloid levels, which can exceed its safe single-day level, especially in children.
